Underwood

Chevy Chase, Maryland

From the onset of design, we teamed with the owner/architects in a solid collaboration of creative sustainable design, using recurring natural cycles as primary design criteria on a tight suburban site. Indoor-outdoor connections allow for free-flowing breezes, easy access, and direct views of ornamental, herb, and vegetable gardens. The capture of rainwater for reuse is a reoccurring theme found throughout the project. A 1,000-gallon cistern, buried beneath an herb garden and entertainment lawn, stores and recycles rainwater for irrigating rooftop vegetable and ornamental gardens. Any water remaining on site is guided to a rain garden in the lower meadow, where it slowly is reabsorbed by the Earth. A rich planting pallet at every level of this contemporary garden reflects the dramatic and easy nature of the home and its inhabitants with swaying grasses, native trees, and vibrant perennials.
